Calvin Johnson is a former American football player and a wide receiver. He was drafted by Detroit Lions in 2007 and has played all nine NFL seasons for them. Johnson nicknamed Megatron, is 6.5 feet tall and has tremendous athletic skills. In March 2012, he signed an eight year extension contract with the Lions costing $ 132 million. He retired on 8th March, 2016. He has scored 11,619 receiving yards during his career, which is the highest receiving yard average of 86.1 yards per game. Between 2011 and 2013, Calvin caught 302 passes, 33 touchdowns and 5,137 receiving yards, which is the highest number of receiving yards any NFL player has received in three years stretch.

Early life of Calvin Johnson

He was born in Newnan, Georgia on September 29, 1985. His parents are Calvin and Arica Johnson. He went to Sandy Creek High School, where he started playing football. In sophomore years he made 34 receptions and 10 touchdowns. In junior years he caught 40 passes and eight touchdowns. By this time all top writers ranked Calvin within top 10 wide receivers and top 100 players of the nation.

Calvin went to Georgia Institute of Technology and played for Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team from 2004 to 2006. In 2004 he was the leading receiver with 48 catches and 7 scores. In 2005 he led Georgia Tech with 54 catches and 6 scores. In 2006 he won the Biletnikoff as the best college wide receiver and was named ACC Player of the year. By scoring 15 touchdowns he broke Georgia Tech’s single season record. He totaled 178 receptions and 28 touchdowns in his college career.

Calvin Johnson Professional Career

Calvin Johnson was the second overall pick by Detroit Lions in 2007 NFL draft. He signed the initial contract for six years for $ 64 million. He was the third highest paid player in Lions history and the highest paid guaranteed money receiver in the NFL. In Johnson’s first match against Oakland Raiders, Lions won 36-21 with Johnson catching 4 passes and his first career touchdown. He finished the season with 756 yards and 5 touchdowns. In 2008 Johnson emerged as the strongest wide receiver of the season. He completed the season with 1331 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns. In 2009 Johnson missed 2 games and ended the season with 67 receptions and 5 touchdowns.

Johnson completed 77 receptions and 12 touchdowns in 2010 and was selected for his first Pro Bowl. In 2011 he reached his season career high with 1,681 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. During first four games of the season Johnson scored eight touchdowns and in a game against Green Bay Packers, he had a career best 244 receiving yards. 2012 was a very good season for Johnson. He finished the season with 122 receptions and 1964 receiving yards. He was also a starter for NFC in Pro Bowl Championship. In a game against Dallas Cowboys in October 2013, Johnson caught 14 out of 16 passes thrown in his direction. In the same game he made the second highest overall single game yardage in NFL history with 329 receiving yards, which was just behind Flipper Anderson’s 336 yard performance in 1989. In 2014 season Johnson became the fastest player in NFL history to reach 10,000 receiving yards. He was also selected for Pro Bowl for the fifth time in a row. 2015 was the last season Calvin Johnson played in NFL. He finished his final season with 88 receptions for 1,214 yards and 9 touchdowns. This was the sixth consecutive season in which that Johnson crossed 1000 receiving yards.
